Correspondence and Photographs 1979-1987

This series comprises a small amount of correspondence for the directing deaconesses of the restructured Deaconess Community of the Lutheran Church in America. These records were generated during the course of these deaconesses fulfilling their duties as chief administrative officer of the community. Records are from 1979-1984 and include seven color photographs depicting events surrounding the installation in 1979 of Sister Sophie Damme as the restructured community's first directing deaconess. Subject matter of the correspondence includes translation of predecessor minutes from German, the deaconess community's 100th anniversary, meditations for devotional booklet, personnel matters, thank-you notes, planning for the deaconess assembly, and a banner for the deaconess community. Of note, correspondence between the directing deaconess and individual deaconesses can be found in each deaconess's personnel file. The subseries on the Consulting Committee on Worship comprises records written or acquired by Sister Sophie Damme pursuant to her involvement with the committee in writing drafts for the book of occasional services. The records date from 1977-1981, but the bulk is from 1979-1981. The record types include correspondence, proposals, drafts, revisions, lists, and a pamphlet, review, spiral-bound notebook, and unpublished manuscript. Most of the materials were generated by the committee, except for correspondence, most of which was generated by DPS representatives, by committee members, by Sister Sophie, and by the Deaconesses. The materials are in good condition; most of them are typed, but some letters and hand-written, and there are many handwritten notes appended to printed drafts and revisions. The records are in English, except for a few materials in German, sent by motherhouses in Germany.
